On May 1, 2024, 77-year-old Kenneth Kirby Humiston was last seen in Naples, Florida. He has not been heard from since. An extensive search was initiated after his kayak was discovered empty and adrift at M.A.Y. Reef, located approximately two miles southwest of Big Carlos Pass and four miles offshore from Fort Myers Beach. Found on the kayak was fishing equipment and a cooler still containing ice, suggesting a sudden and unexpected disappearance.
The discovery of the abandoned kayak prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation. Multiple agencies, including the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Collier County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard, collaborated in the effort. The search covered a wide expanse of the Gulf of Mexico, including Estero Bay and Wiggins Pass. Despite the thorough and prolonged search, no sign of Humiston was found, and he is now presumed to be lost at sea.
