Judith Carole Himes, a 22-year-old medical technician, was last seen in Coral Gables, Florida, on September 14, 1965. A recent divorcée, Himes had discovered she was pregnant the month prior to her disappearance. Given the social stigma surrounding unwed mothers at the time, she sought a solution outside of the societal norms. On the day she vanished, Himes informed a friend she was going shopping for a watch and withdrew $300 from her bank account. However, her actual intention was to undergo an illegal abortion. She was never heard from again.
Three weeks after her disappearance, Himes's rental car was discovered abandoned in Atlanta, Georgia, approximately 650 miles north of Coral Gables. The vehicle had been parked in the residential area for at least three days. Investigators found traces of blood in the backseat of the car. Witnesses reported seeing a man in his thirties park the car, remove a duffel bag from the trunk, and then leave the scene. This man has never been identified. Further investigation revealed that the individual who ran the abortion clinic Himes intended to visit was a Hungarian immigrant posing as a physician. He was arrested three months after her disappearance on charges of perjury and impersonating a doctor, but he subsequently jumped bail and is believed to have fled to Hungary.
The case grew cold over the years but gained renewed attention after being featured on the television show *Unsolved Mysteries*. Following the broadcast, the Coral Gables Police Department received an anonymous letter. The author of the letter claimed that Himes had died during the abortion procedure due to an allergic reaction to an anesthetic and that her body had been disposed of in Biscayne Bay near Miami. While law enforcement found the letter credible, the information has never been officially confirmed, and the author remains unknown. In another strange turn of events, there were tips suggesting that Himes was alive and residing in Omaha, Nebraska, though none of these leads could be substantiated.
