He departed from the Smyrna Marina at noon, piloting his 37-foot sailboat named the "Concessions" with the intention of sailing to the Ponce de Leon Inlet. However, he never reached his destination and has not been seen or heard from since. The day following his departure, the Concessions was discovered adrift 25 miles offshore.
The boat was out of fuel, the sails were down, and two large black duffel bags that Gamache had brought aboard were missing. A comprehensive search of the surrounding 1,700 square miles of ocean yielded no trace of the missing man.
At the time of his disappearance, Gamache was facing significant personal challenges. He was going through a contentious divorce from his wife of 14 years and was in debt, including being behind on alimony payments. In September 2000, shortly after his wife left him, he was charged with felony criminal mischief for allegedly vandalizing her car. Gamache was scheduled to appear in court for both the alimony and criminal mischief cases in the week following his disappearance.
