Mary Carol Hill Fredrick, a 37-year-old law student and child advocate, vanished from her home in the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa, Florida on June 3, 1994. At the time of her disappearance, her husband and young son were on a camping trip in the western United States. Fredrick was reported missing by her husband on June 6, 1994, after she failed to make her customary weekly call to her sister and could not be reached.
Upon investigation, police found Fredrick's house locked with an outside light on. Her school textbooks were left on a table, but her purse and a gun were missing. Her burgundy Pontiac Subaru station wagon was left at the residence. There has been no activity on her credit cards or bank accounts since her disappearance, and nothing appeared to be amiss inside her home.
Fredrick was an employee of the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services and had recently taken a leave of absence to attend Stetson University Law School. She was reportedly excited about her new career path and was a dedicated mother. Friends and family have stated that it would be uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning or abandon her son.
Investigators learned that Fredrick was last seen in the company of a coworker, Louis Joseph Hlava III. It is believed that they had dinner and watched videos at her home on the night she was last seen. Hlava was interviewed by police after her disappearance but did not provide any information regarding her whereabouts.
