Marjorie Ann Cain, a 33-year-old civilian worker at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, was last seen at her home on Gilliland Street in Navy Point, Florida, on the evening of May 11, 1990. Her ten-year-old son reported going to bed around 9:00 p.m. and did not hear anything unusual during the night. The next morning, he discovered his mother was gone, though her purse had been left behind.
He went to school, as it was not uncommon for his mother to have already left for work by the time he woke up. Marjorie Cain was officially reported missing at 1:30 p.m. on May 12, after she failed to return home.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered a violent scene at Cain's residence. Bloodstains and drag marks were found on the porch and walkway, along with bloody boot prints. There was also evidence that someone had attempted to clean up inside the house. Later that afternoon, at approximately 2:40 p.m., Cain's vehicle was located near the Navy Point bridge and Bayou Grande, a few blocks from her home. Investigators found small drops of what was later identified as Cain's blood in the trunk. The driver's seat was pushed back, suggesting that a person taller than Cain was the last to drive the car.
Suspicion soon fell upon Cain's ex-husband, Gary Bernard Breeze. In 1992, he was charged with her murder after allegedly confessing to at least six different people. While the details of his stories varied, he reportedly expressed confidence that he would not be punished due to the absence of a body. Another of Breeze's ex-wives described him as a violent man, and Cain's cousin testified that Breeze had raped Cain two months before her disappearance.
In 1993, Gary Bernard Breeze was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with Marjorie Ann Cain's disappearance and presumed death. He received a sentence of forty years in prison. Breeze had a prior criminal record for sexual offenses against young boys.
