Claudia Darlene Bamber, a 40-year-old woman from Zephyrhills, Florida, has been missing since August 13, 2001. At the time of her disappearance, she was married to Earl Bamber, and the couple lived on Terrain Court with their young daughter. Friends and family of Darlene described her marriage as abusive, and her mother stated that Darlene had sought a restraining order against her husband in the summer of 2001, although they continued to live together.
In the early morning hours of August 13, 2001, Darlene spoke with her mother on the phone at around 4:00 a.m. She mentioned she had insomnia and was on the couch with her four-year-old daughter. Darlene discussed her plans to take her brown station wagon for maintenance and get a manicure. She also had plans to move to the Dallas, Texas area with her daughter and brother later that month to get away from her husband, Earl. The last confirmed sighting of Darlene was later that day when she dropped off her daughter at a daycare center.
Following Darlene's disappearance, her husband, Earl Bamber, provided inconsistent accounts to investigators. He initially claimed Darlene left with all her clothes in a Lincoln or Cadillac that was parked down the street. He later changed his story, stating she drove off in her station wagon with their child, but authorities confirmed their daughter was at home and Darlene's vehicle was in the driveway. Earl then claimed she left in an unknown vehicle and had called him several times after her disappearance, a statement authorities could not verify. A search of the couple's home revealed that most of Darlene's personal belongings, including her clothes, makeup, and toiletries, were still there.
Earl Bamber had an extensive criminal history, with 42 arrests for various crimes, including attempted murder and kidnapping. He had been married six times, with one of his previous wives reportedly dying by suicide and another accusing him of abuse. In April 2002, Earl Bamber died of natural causes in the home he had shared with Darlene. Following Darlene’s disappearance, their daughter was removed from Earl’s custody and placed in the care of Darlene’s mother.
