Myung Ki Kim, a 53-year-old man from Vienna, Virginia, was last seen on the afternoon of October 25, 2009, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He was fishing on a jetty near the Indian River Inlet when he slipped on the rocks and was subsequently knocked into the water by a wave at approximately 1:30 p.m. At the time of the incident, Kim was wearing a dark blue raincoat and wader boots.
According to reports, a witness saw Kim fall into the water and alerted the authorities.
The Coast Guard received a call from the Sussex County Police Department at 1:29 p.m. The tide at the inlet was reportedly flooding at the time of the incident. Weather conditions included 10-knot winds and 2-foot seas, with visibility of 10 nautical miles.
An extensive search and rescue operation was launched, involving a rescue boat crew from the Coast Guard Station Indian River, a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., as well as members of the Sussex County Police Department and Sussex County Fire and Rescue. Despite their efforts, which continued until the evening, no sign of Kim was found. By 6 p.m., the Coast Guard and local agencies suspended their search.
Due to the circumstances of his disappearance and the unsuccessful search, Myung Ki Kim is presumed to have drowned. His body has never been recovered. Some accounts spell his first name "Myungtiki". He was described as an Asian male with black hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'9" to 5'10" and weighing 175 pounds.
