Just four days prior to her disappearance, she had filed for divorce from her husband, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant, and had moved with her children into a condominium.
The initial investigation into Ann's disappearance uncovered suspicious circumstances. Her car was discovered on April 25, 1991, at a Van Nuys FlyAway airport shuttle lot, suggesting she may have taken a trip. However, investigators found no record of her on any flight manifests. John Racz claimed to have spoken with his wife two days after she went missing, but this information could not be corroborated. Friends and family described Ann as a meticulous planner who was devoted to her children and would not have left without a word. They noted she was looking forward to starting a new chapter in her life and had even reconnected with a high school sweetheart.
For years, the case remained cold, though suspicion centered on John Racz. A breakthrough came in October 2006 when, after a renewed investigation, John Racz was arrested for his wife's murder upon his return from a trip to Thailand. The case against him was largely circumstantial, as Ann's body has never been found.
In August 2007, a jury convicted John Racz of first-degree murder. Prosecutors argued that he had killed his estranged wife on the day she disappeared. Neighbors testified to seeing John Racz follow Ann in his car after she left their former home. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison.
