At the time of her disappearance, she was living in a converted self-storage unit at Anchor Self-Storage in Paramount, California. A fire destroyed this unconventional home on December 12, 2001. After a thorough investigation of the fire debris, authorities found no evidence to suggest she perished in the blaze.
Plunkett was a slender, red-headed woman with hazel eyes, standing at 5'6" and weighing approximately 132 pounds. Friends and family described her as eccentric and noted that she showed signs of manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder. Her lifestyle was unconventional; she had equipped her windowless storage unit with a mattress, refrigerator, portable toilet, and even a phone line. She was known to frequent casinos in Barstow, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Missing Persons Unit theorize that the emotional trauma from the fire may have caused severe psychological distress for Plunkett. They believe it's possible she could be living on the streets or in a facility that provides psychiatric care. Her family remains deeply concerned for her well-being.
