Jana Carpenter-Koklich, a 41-year-old woman from Lakewood, California, was last seen on August 17, 2001, after attending an Eric Clapton concert with friends. According to her husband, Bruce Koklich, Jana returned home late that evening. She was scheduled to meet her personal trainer the next morning, but never arrived, which was highly unusual for her. Her mother also attempted to contact her several times throughout the day on August 18, but received no response.

On August 20, Bruce reported Jana missing after she failed to show up for work. Initially, there were no major leads, but suspicions grew when her vehicle, a white Nissan Pathfinder, was found on August 27 in Signal Hill, Long Beach, with blood in the backseat. Despite an extensive investigation, Jana's body was never found, though authorities later concluded she had likely been murdered. Blood evidence in the couple's home suggested she may have been killed there, and Bruce became the primary suspect.

Bruce Koklich was eventually charged and convicted of second-degree murder in 2003, even though Jana's remains have never been located. Investigators believed financial motives, including the potential for a costly divorce and a $1 million life insurance policy, were key factors behind the crime. Despite the conviction, the mystery surrounding Jana’s final moments continues, as her body has yet to be recovered.
