Robert David Peirce, a 76-year-old man, went missing from Palm Springs, California, on December 8, 1998. He was last seen at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the post office located in the Smoke Tree Shopping Center on East Palm Canyon Drive and Sunrise Way. Peirce, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease and could become easily disoriented, was with his caretaker at the time. The caretaker momentarily turned away to mail a letter, and when she looked back, Peirce had vanished.
An extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted, but no trace of him was found.
At the time of his disappearance, Peirce was described as a 5'11" white male, weighing approximately 175 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He had a mustache and wore silver-framed prescription eyeglasses. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved gray and brown plaid shirt and blue jeans.
Peirce was a former counselor at Indio and Coachella high schools. This was not the first time he had wandered off; on a previous occasion, he was found safe seventeen miles from his home. His son speculated that he might have been trying to make his way back to La Quinta, California, where he had resided in the 1950s. Despite these details, very little evidence has emerged in his case since he was reported missing.
