Karen Elizabeth Knechtel Mero, a 27-year-old woman, was last seen on February 15, 1997, in McCloud, California. She was on the front porch of the home of Ed Henline Sr. and his wife, which was located on east Minnesota Avenue. At the time, Mero had been living at the residence with her boyfriend, Ed Henline Jr. Following her disappearance, Mero was not immediately reported missing. It wasn't until October 1997, eight months after she was last seen, that a missing person's report was filed with law enforcement. Initially, both authorities and her parents believed that Mero may have left on her own accord, as there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest. However, as months passed with no contact, concern for her welfare grew. Mero was separated from her husband and her sole income was $700 a month in disability payments. She also had a medical condition requiring regular medication, having undergone a liver transplant in 1994.
The investigation into Mero's disappearance uncovered suspicious financial activity. Ed Henline Sr. and his wife were accused of writing fraudulent checks from Mero's bank account after she was last seen. In April 1998, the couple was arrested on suspicion of forging Mero's disability checks. They later pleaded guilty to perjury in connection with the forgery case and were sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to pay restitution. The Henline home was searched by law enforcement for evidence related to Mero's disappearance, as well as another missing person case.
Mero's case is intertwined with the disappearance of another individual from the same area. In June 1997, just a few months after Mero was last seen, a 17-year-old girl named Hannah Zaccaglini also went missing from McCloud. The Henlines were questioned in both cases, and their home was searched as part of the investigation into both disappearances. In 2012, Ed Henline Sr. and his son, Ed Henline Jr., were arrested and charged in connection with Hannah Zaccaglini's murder. However, the charges against both men were later dropped in May 2013 due to a lack of evidence. Authorities have stated that the Henlines remain potential suspects in both unsolved cases.
