On June 23, 2017, 35-year-old Nicholas Deloss Marold of Arroyo Grande, California, was reported missing after he fell overboard from an inflatable fishing vessel approximately three miles off the coast of Port San Luis in San Luis Obispo County. Marold was on the boat with a friend when the incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing black swimming trunks and a black long-sleeve shirt. Marold is described as a white male, standing at 6'1" to 6'2" tall, weighing between 186 and 190 pounds, with short blond hair and green eyes.
An extensive search and rescue operation was launched involving multiple agencies. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Morro Bay and a helicopter from Point Mugu. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office, including its Marine Enforcement Unit and Underwater Search and Recovery Dive Team, the Port San Luis Harbor Patrol, and the California Highway Patrol also participated in the search efforts. Despite their efforts, Marold was not located, and his body has not been recovered.
The official search for Nicholas Deloss Marold was suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Sheriff's Office by the evening of June 23, 2017. Marold is presumed to have drowned. At the time he went missing, he worked as a corrective exercise specialist and was known to fish regularly with a friend on Friday afternoons. Although he is presumed deceased, his remains have never been found. The San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department handled the case.
