On November 1, 1986, 51-year-old Hugh Frederick Harlin disappeared after completing a two-day construction job in San Simeon, California. He was last seen at approximately 1:30 p.m. leaving the job site to return to his home in Morro Bay, a 27-mile drive. The following day, a friend who had lent Harlin tools for the job discovered his blue 1967 Chevrolet utility bed pickup truck abandoned on the side of Highway 1 near Cambria. The truck was found with its hood up, doors locked, and various personal belongings inside, including his glasses, sleeping bag, backpack, tools, and lunch.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery of Harlin's truck suggested he may have encountered vehicle trouble. Investigators found that the fuel line had been removed from the truck, and Harlin's keys were discovered in the grass nearby, leading to a theory that he may have started walking to a service station for assistance. A search of the immediate area by sheriff's deputies was conducted on November 4, the day Harlin was officially reported missing, followed by a more extensive search by a rescue team four days later; however, no trace of him was found.
Harlin's disappearance was complicated by the unsolved murder of his wife, Dian Harlin, four years earlier in October 1982. Dian was found strangled with a dog leash on a Morro Bay beach. Hugh Harlin had been a person of interest in his wife's death but was eventually ruled out as a suspect, and no one was ever charged with the crime. This history led to multiple theories regarding his disappearance. Some investigators and friends believed he may have been a victim of foul play, possibly at the hands of the same person who killed his wife. A former Morro Bay police detective noted that Harlin had "a lot of friends and a lot of enemies."
Another theory considered by authorities was that Harlin, who was known as a survivalist capable of living off the land, may have staged his own disappearance to start a new life. Friends acknowledged he had taken off on trips before, but never without informing someone. Despite the various theories, no definitive evidence has ever emerged to explain what happened to Hugh Frederick Harlin, and his case remains an unsolved missing person investigation.
