On July 2, 2001, 32-year-old Tigist Hailu was last seen in Mission Viejo, California. At the time of her disappearance, Hailu was employed as a nanny by a family from the United Arab Emirates. She had traveled with the family to the United States to care for their children during their visit to Mission Viejo.
The evening she went missing, her employers had gone out.
When they returned to the residence shortly after midnight, they discovered that Hailu was gone and the children had been left unattended. It was also discovered that Hailu's purse and some money were missing from the home. Since that night, she has not been seen or heard from again.
Following her disappearance, Hailu's employers informed investigators that she had expressed a desire to remain in the United States. This has led to the theory that she may have left on her own accord to avoid returning to the United Arab Emirates. At the time of her disappearance, Hailu was described as a Black female with brown hair, standing at 5 feet tall and weighing 150 pounds.
