Paulo F. Fundament, a 59-year-old man, was last seen in Newport Beach, California on October 1, 2016. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a White male, 5'6" tall and weighing 150 pounds, with gray hair and green eyes. He wore eyeglasses and was born in Brazil. Fundament was being treated for depression and had expressed suicidal ideation before he went missing.
The circumstances leading to Fundament's disappearance are distressing. At 4:11 a.m. on the day he was last seen, he sent a three-page suicide note to his estranged wife via email. In the note, he expressed his love for her and requested that their children be his inheritors. Later that day, his wife discovered his will, dated September 30, at his home, which left all his possessions to their sons. His car, car keys, wallet, and cell phone were all found at his residence. However, a gun was missing from the home and has not been located.
Prior to his disappearance, Fundament was facing significant personal and professional challenges. His business had failed, and his wife had recently filed for divorce. These events reportedly led him to seek psychiatric help for depression and suicidal thoughts. Tragically, there was a history of suicide in his family; his father had taken his own life, and his mother had attempted to do so.
Following his disappearance, law enforcement conducted searches in a nearby nature preserve under the assumption that Fundament may have taken his life there. Despite the use of five cadaver dogs, no trace of him was found, and the dogs did not detect the scent of human remains. Although his body has never been recovered, authorities presume that he took his own life. Fundament was an engineering graduate from the University of Washington and ran his own engineering company, Fundament and Associates. He was known to enjoy outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, camping, running, and sailing. The Newport Beach Police Department is the investigating agency for his case.
