In the summer of 1980, in Fairfield, Alabama, a 32-year-old secretary named Emmetta Jean Dumas was looking forward to simple plans. On August 1st, she was scheduled to go out with her estranged husband, Leroy, to buy a new pair of shoes for their infant daughter.
