In the quiet early morning hours of February 10, 2023, 83-year-old Roderick D. Latham departed from his residence in Snohomish, Washington. He left unexpectedly at approximately 1:30 a.m. in his black 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck, a vehicle he did not typically drive. This sudden departure was concerning as he left without notifying his wife and did not take essential personal items such as his phone, credit cards, or necessary medications. Mr.
Latham, a white male with gray hair and blue eyes, stood at 5 feet 10 inches and weighed around 160 pounds. At the time he was last seen, he was believed to be wearing light-colored pants, a brown and white flannel shirt, a dark gray wool jacket, gray shoes, and a baseball cap. He was also wearing his gold wedding band.
Two days after he went missing, on February 12, 2023, Mr. Latham's black GMC Sierra pickup, which had a canopy, was discovered abandoned. The truck was located near a Darrington Forest Service Road in the vicinity of Rat Trap Pass within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. This discovery prompted an extensive search effort in the rugged and remote area. Over 45 ground searchers, in addition to helicopters, drones, K-9 units, and specialized trackers, were deployed to comb the region for any sign of the missing man. The search was a significant operation, involving members of the Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue, as well as mountain rescue teams from outside the county who were called in to assist.
Despite the comprehensive and multi-day search efforts by dedicated teams, no trace of Roderick Latham was found. His disappearance is particularly troubling given that he has dementia and was without his required medication. The circumstances surrounding his early morning departure and the subsequent discovery of his abandoned vehicle in a remote national forest have left his family and authorities with many unanswered questions. The case remains an active missing person investigation, a quiet and unresolved story that began with a drive in the middle of the night.
