On September 2, 2025, 40-year-old planetary geologist Riccardo Pozzobon was last seen on the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, Alaska, while conducting field research with two colleagues. According to Alaska and local reports, he fell into a fast-moving surface stream and was swept down a narrow vertical ice shaft known as a moulin. His team was studying fracture patterns on the glacier; reporting also notes the work was supported by the National Geographic Society.
