On January 12, 1952, Burton Lorenzo McGuire, a 30-year-old pilot and Chief Pilot of General Airways, Inc., embarked on a cargo flight from Portland, Oregon, to Merrill Field in Anchorage, Alaska. The aircraft, a Douglas C-47A-DK was carrying a load primarily composed of crated eggs. McGuire was accompanied by First Officer George A. Simpson.
