In the spring of 2023, concern began to grow for 50-year-old Shannon Dionne Anderson of Edenton, North Carolina. Family members became worried after Shannon, a local artist known for her wood carvings, turned off her cell phone and deactivated her social media accounts. This unusual silence prompted them to request a welfare check on April 26, 2023. When police arrived at her apartment in Chowan Gardens, they found it secured, but Shannon was not there.
Security camera footage would later show her leaving the property in her white 2018 Ford Escape on the evening of Tuesday, April 25, 2023. This would be the last confirmed sighting of Shannon.
The investigation into Shannon's whereabouts took a puzzling turn when her Ford Escape was discovered abandoned in a rural area of Camden County, near Broad Creek in the Camden Point area. It was learned that on the night she disappeared, Shannon had approached a couple of homes in that neighborhood, a community with a significant Vietnamese population, asking for directions and looking for a specific person. Residents recalled her asking for someone, but investigators later determined the individual she was seeking actually lived in Virginia. After speaking with that person, law enforcement was no closer to understanding Shannon's intentions or her subsequent movements. Her direction of travel after leaving her vehicle remains unknown.
The days and weeks that followed were filled with extensive search efforts. The U.S. Coast Guard joined the search, using a helicopter to scan a nearby wooded swamp area, but found no signs of Shannon. Search and rescue dogs, cadaver dogs, and teams in boats were also deployed to no avail. Her sister, Jody, described Shannon as being very close to her family but noted that she had seemed distant before she went missing, suggesting she may have been re-evaluating her life. Months after her disappearance, with no new leads, Shannon's family has continued their search, even expanding their efforts by putting up missing person signs in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, clinging to the hope that she is still alive.
