In January 2025, the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office began investigating the disappearance of 33-year-old Hailey E. Athay. In the late autumn of 2024, a 33-year-old mother named Hailey Athay vanished from the area of Kelso, Washington. She was last seen around Thanksgiving, reportedly at a South Kelso store and a local Chevron. Friends and family believe that shortly before she disappeared, she had gone into the woods in the rural Rose Valley area with a male friend, with the intention of picking mushrooms. While her acquaintance reportedly returned from the woods, Hailey did not, marking the beginning of a long and painful period of uncertainty for her loved ones. Her trail went cold, and all communication from her abruptly stopped, leaving her family with mounting fear and unanswered questions. As days turned into weeks without any word from Hailey, her family's concern grew into a nightmare. While her mother acknowledged that Hailey had faced personal struggles with addiction and mental health in the past and had occasionally been out of touch, this prolonged and complete silence was different and deeply alarming. Convinced that something was wrong, her family filed an official missing person report with the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office in early January 2025. In the months that followed, a community of friends, family, and volunteers rallied together, refusing to let Hailey be forgotten. They organized search parties that scoured the rough terrain of Rose Valley, Toutle, and areas along the Ocean Beach Highway, distributing flyers and leveraging social media to spread awareness in the hopes of finding any clue that might lead them to her. For over a year, the investigation continued with few public updates, and the family's search for answers persisted. Then, in April 2026, a breakthrough occurred when two hikers on Weyerhaeuser property near Rose Valley Road discovered some clothing and bones. They reported their find to the authorities, which led to a coordinated search of the area the following day by the sheriff's office and search and rescue teams. The search party was able to locate nearly complete skeletal remains, along with clothing and personal belongings, in a location that had previously been an area of interest during earlier, unsuccessful searches. Using dental records, the Cowlitz County Coroner's Office soon confirmed the remains belonged to Hailey Athay. The discovery brought a devastating end to the search for the missing mother. While finding her provided her family a degree of closure, it also marked the beginning of their quest for justice, as her cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
