In the uncertain days leading up to Hurricane Helene's arrival in North Carolina, family members of 36-year-old Stephen Allen Riddle last heard from him on September 26, 2024. A resident of Asheville, in Buncombe County, Riddle's lack of communication became increasingly concerning as the hurricane unleashed devastating floods and widespread destruction across the western part of the state.
In the storm's chaotic aftermath, with power outages and disrupted cell service, many people were unaccounted for, prompting worried loved ones to report them missing to emergency crews.
Stephen Riddle is described as a white male, standing six feet tall and weighing around 240 pounds, with blond or strawberry blond, balding hair and green eyes. His appearance is further distinguished by several tattoos. These include a pot leaf on his left shoulder, the names 'CALEB' and 'ISISHA' on his left forearm, and the phrase 'In Lovin Memory Papaw Ed' also on his left forearm. Additionally, he has a Chinese symbol and the name 'CALEB' on his right forearm, the words 'Trust No Bitch' on his left wrist, and 'Live & Learn' on his right wrist, along with a scar on his right hand.
The search for the missing in Asheville and the surrounding areas was an arduous task for authorities in the weeks that followed Hurricane Helene. The Asheville Police Department, along with other first responders, conducted welfare checks and search and rescue operations amidst the debris and damage left by the storm. A Family Assistance Center was established in Buncombe County to coordinate efforts and provide information to those searching for loved ones. As search efforts continued, a number of individuals who were initially reported missing were thankfully found alive.
