On the morning of June 16, 2023, 70-year-old Timothy Wilson, Jr., a male resident of Kake, Alaska, embarked on a solo fishing trip near Pup Island. An experienced fisherman familiar with the local waters, his failure to return that evening as planned caused immediate concern among his family and friends. When he did not come back, the Alaska State Troopers were notified, initiating a search for the overdue boater. Mr. Wilson was last seen wearing black pants and Xtra Tuffs boots. The United States Coast Guard joined the search efforts, utilizing a cell phone ping to determine Mr. Wilson's last known position, which was approximately six miles southwest of Kake, near Payne Island. On the morning of June 17, 2023, his 15-foot Lund boat was discovered adrift but tied to a small rock near Point Napean, about 13 miles northwest of Kake. The discovery of the empty vessel prompted an intensified search of the surrounding waters and the shoreline of southern Admiralty Island. Data from the boat's GPS suggested that he might have also been to Point McCartney, and that area was also included in the search. An extensive search operation was conducted, covering over 377 square nautical miles over a nearly 16-hour period. This effort involved multiple Coast Guard crews, the Alaska State Troopers, and search and rescue teams from the nearby communities of Kake, Angoon, and Wrangell, as well as several civilian vessels that volunteered to help. Despite these thorough efforts, no sign of Mr. Wilson was found. The official search was suspended at sunset on Saturday, June 17, 2023. The decision to suspend the active search is a difficult one and is made only after exhaustive efforts have been made. The case remains a painful mystery for his loved ones and the close-knit community of Kake, as the exact circumstances of his disappearance from his boat are still unknown.
