On August 27, 2024, 34-year-old Christa Merrill was last seen in Clarksburg, West Virginia. She had informed her family that she would return to Fairmont that day but never arrived. Prior to her disappearance, Merrill had been released from the North Central Regional Jail and was staying with an acquaintance in Clarksburg. Family members noted that it was uncharacteristic of her to go without contact, even during challenging times. Her sister, Hannah Kinty, emphasized the unusual nature of her silence, stating that Merrill typically maintained regular communication.
In the weeks following her disappearance, Merrill's family took proactive steps to locate her. They filed a police report on September 12, 2024, with the Harrison County Sheriff's Office and distributed flyers throughout the area. A search party was organized outside the Harrison County Courthouse in October 2024, aiming to gather information and raise awareness about her case.
Despite these efforts, leads remained scarce, and concerns for her well-being grew.
On January 29, 2025, authorities discovered human remains at a residence on Owings Road in Shinnston, West Virginia. The Harrison County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the FBI, executed a search warrant at the property, leading to the excavation. Subsequent testing confirmed the remains were those of Christa Merrill. Sheriff Robert Matheny stated that further analysis was needed to determine the cause of death.
The property where Merrill's remains were found is registered to Andrew Neal Debolt, a convicted sex offender with a history of legal issues, including a 2005 conviction for first-degree sexual abuse and a 2016 federal prison sentence for firearms charges. At the time of the discovery, Debolt was incarcerated at the Salem Correctional Center on unrelated charges. Authorities have not yet disclosed any connection between Debolt and Merrill or provided details about the circumstances leading to her death.
