In the summer of 2024, concern grew for Matthew Arthur Chiu, a 36-year-old man in Athens, Georgia. He was last seen on July 15, 2024, leaving Cornerstone Church on Lexington Road. At the time of his disappearance, Matthew was described as being 5'7' and weighing around 170 pounds, with several distinctive tattoos, including a King of Hearts on his left hand and a Queen of Hearts on his right. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department began asking for the public's help in locating him, circulating his description and the clothing he was last seen wearing: a black T-shirt and jeans. His family, who lived in Pennsylvania, noted that he had been despondent after recently losing his job and apartment. According to police reports, he was experiencing homelessness when he vanished.

As the weeks turned into months, there were no strong leads regarding Matthew's whereabouts. Detectives received several tips from the community, but unfortunately, none of them led to finding him. His cell phone, when called, would not ring, adding to the distress of his friends and family who were anxiously awaiting any news. The search continued, with law enforcement and loved ones holding out hope for a safe return.

Regrettably, the search for Matthew Chiu came to a sorrowful end in the fall. More than three months after he was last seen, his body was discovered in a wooded area behind The Church at College Station on College Station Road. His remains were transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's forensic lab for official identification and to determine the cause of death. The discovery brought a tragic conclusion to a case that began with a man leaving a church one summer day. The investigation into his disappearance highlighted the difficulties faced by those without stable housing and the profound impact of personal struggles, ultimately ending in heartbreak for his family and community.
