On July 20, 2024, Hans William Munich, a 54-year-old male from Yakutat, Alaska, became the subject of a search after the aircraft he was in never reached its destination. He was a passenger in a 1948 silver Beechcraft Bonanza A35, with tail number N410B, that departed from Gustavus, Alaska, en route to Yakutat. Also on board were Tanya Hutchins, with whom Munich owned Coastal Air Service, and the pilot, Samuel "Sam" Wright, an experienced aviator from Haines. Both Munich and Wright were seasoned pilots with decades of experience flying in Southeast Alaska. The plane was reported overdue on the evening of July 20th, prompting an immediate response. The United States Coast Guard, along with the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, Civil Air Patrol, and Alaska State Troopers, initiated a comprehensive search effort. Search and rescue teams focused their attention on the Fairweather Mountain Range, specifically near Mount Crillon, which is where the aircraft's radar signal was last detected at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet. The search was hampered by challenging weather conditions, including reduced visibility, wind gusts, and low cloud ceilings, which are common in the mountainous terrain of the region. Despite the extensive search by air and sea, which spanned several days, crews were unable to locate the missing plane or its occupants. After days of intensive searching with no results, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend the official search. The disappearance of the three individuals has been a devastating blow to the tight-knit aviation community in Southeast Alaska, where air travel is a vital part of daily life. Friends, family, and colleagues remembered Hans Munich as a highly skilled and meticulous pilot. The families of the missing have discussed the possibility of continuing the search efforts on their own. The investigation into the disappearance of the Beechcraft Bonanza and the three individuals aboard remains a sorrowful mystery, leaving a void in the communities of Yakutat and Haines.
