On July 20, 2024, 50-year-old Tanya Hutchins, along with her partner Hans Munich and pilot Samuel "Sam" Wright, boarded a 1948 silver Beechcraft Bonanza A35 in Juneau, Alaska. The group was making the journey back to their hometown of Yakutat, a flight that should have taken about an hour. Hutchins and Munich, owners of a charter flight business called Coastal Air Service, were passengers on the plane piloted by Wright, a seasoned pilot from Haines with decades of experience. The flight departed from Juneau around 1:45 p.m., but it would never reach its destination. A friend who was tracking the flight online noticed the radar signal stopped abruptly near Mount Crillon in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, approximately 100 miles west of Juneau, and alerted the authorities when the plane became overdue. The disappearance of the aircraft, carrying three beloved members of the close-knit Southeast Alaskan aviation community, triggered an extensive search and rescue operation. The U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center were all involved, deploying helicopters, planes, and boat crews to scour the rugged Fairweather Mountain Range where the plane's signal was last detected at an altitude of about 10,000 feet. Search efforts were significantly hampered by the challenging terrain and poor weather conditions, which included fog, rain, cloud cover, and gusty winds. After nearly three days of intensive searching with no signs of the aircraft or its occupants, the official search was suspended. Despite the official search being called off, the local community and friends of the missing individuals were not ready to give up hope. A private search effort, organized and carried on by fellow pilots and members of the Southeast Alaska aviation community, continued for weeks. This persistent private search eventually led to a heartbreaking discovery. Wreckage from the missing Beechcraft Bonanza was found on the eastern side of East Crillon Mountain. The discovery of the crumpled aluminum brought a devastating conclusion to the search, confirming the fears of those who knew and loved Tanya Hutchins, Hans Munich, and Samuel Wright. The case stands as a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness and the profound impact of loss within a tightly connected community.
