On January 3, 1991, 35-year-old Susan Carol Cassell, a nurse and U.S. Army veteran, disappeared from her home in Glendale, Arizona. She was last seen by her husband, James F. Cassell, leaving their residence. Susan worked as a nurse at Boswell Memorial Hospital in Sun City and had just completed a long shift on the day she went missing. According to her mother, Susan called her that day and mentioned being tired from work. Her husband's account to the police was that she had returned home from work unexpectedly and then left again. The circumstances surrounding Susan's disappearance have raised suspicions of foul play. Shortly after Susan was last seen, her husband and their four-year-old son went on an overnight camping trip. When they returned the next day, January 4, 1991, Susan was not home, and her husband reported her missing. Significantly, Susan's car was found at her home, and she had left behind several uncashed paychecks from the hospital. Her mother has stated that it was highly uncharacteristic of Susan to disappear without any warning, and though she had mentioned some problems in her marriage, she was generally in good spirits. Over a year after her disappearance, in February 1992, James Cassell was granted a divorce from Susan and subsequently moved to Pennsylvania with their son. Despite law enforcement suspecting foul play in her case, no arrests have ever been made. Susan's family does not believe she would have voluntarily left her son. The case received little media attention for many years after she vanished. Susan Cassell is described as a social person with strong religious values who has a birthmark on the back of her neck and wears glasses or contact lenses. The case remains an unresolved and troubling mystery, leaving her loved ones without answers for decades.
