Jared Michael Negrete, a 12-year-old Boy Scout, disappeared on July 19, 1991, during his first overnight camping trip in the San Bernardino National Forest, near the summit of Mount San Gorgonio. The Boy Scout group was hiking toward the summit when Jared, tired and lagging behind, was told to stay put while the rest of the troop completed the hike. When the group returned, Jared was gone.
A massive search ensued, involving hundreds of search and rescue workers scouring the rough terrain. Searchers found footprints believed to be Jared's, along with his backpack, some candy wrappers, and his camera. The film inside the camera revealed scenic shots and a haunting close-up photo of Jared’s eyes and nose, taken after he had already gone missing. Despite extensive efforts, including the use of helicopters and infrared technology, Jared was never found.
The case remains unsolved, and theories about Jared's fate range from him getting lost in the rugged terrain to potential accidents or even foul play, although there is no concrete evidence supporting any specific conclusion. Jared's family continues to seek closure, but the search for answers continues to this day.
