On June 20, 1998, a 46-year-old U.S. Marine veteran named Arthur Deering was last seen in Beacon, New York. A friend had given him a ride to the Metro-North train station at approximately 8:00 p.m. that evening. Arthur, who went by the nicknames Art or Artie, was reportedly on his way to the Montrose Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital for ongoing treatment. He had recently been an inpatient at the facility for six weeks and was discharged just eight days prior to his disappearance. At the time he was last seen, Arthur was carrying a large black plastic bag that held most of his personal belongings. He was wearing a black POW T-shirt and blue jeans. Arthur never arrived at the VA hospital, and no one has reported hearing from him since that evening. Arthur is a veteran of the Vietnam War and, as a result, lives with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His health was a significant concern as he also had diabetes and required medication for his conditions. It is believed he may not have been taking his medication at the time he went missing, which could cause him to become disoriented and paranoid. His family reported him missing on June 25, 1998, five days after he was last seen. A few days after his disappearance, his vehicle was found abandoned on Spring Valley Street in Beacon, but there was no indication of what may have happened to him. Arthur has several distinguishing physical characteristics: he walks with a limp, has a large scar on his left leg, a heart tattoo on his right arm, and is missing two front teeth. Before he vanished, Arthur had been living in Kingston, New York, and his sister was planning to help him find an apartment there during the week he went missing. He had previously resided in other states, including Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida. His family has expressed the heart-wrenching possibility that Arthur could be disoriented and living on the streets, perhaps in one of the areas he previously called home, and may not realize that his loved ones are searching for him. The case of Arthur Deering's disappearance is a somber reminder of the invisible wounds that veterans can carry. Despite the passage of time, the investigation into his whereabouts remains open, leaving his family with unanswered questions. His case remains an active and unresolved missing person investigation.
