In May of 1999, the life of 28-year-old Daniel Gerard Chervenka Jr., a man of many talents and a United States Navy veteran, took a turn that left his family searching for answers. Living in Phoenix, Arizona, Daniel, also known as Dan or Danny, was a father to a young daughter and was pursuing studies in astrophysics and philosophy. He was a gifted pencil portrait artist, played classical guitar, and had taken karate lessons.
However, Daniel had also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1997 and had reportedly stopped taking his medication in 1998, leading to a worsening of his condition. On May 28, 1999, after having dinner with his family in Fountain Hills, he returned to his Phoenix apartment. That evening, he made a distressing phone call to his sister, in which he reportedly made unspecified threats towards family members. Although his sister contacted the police, they were unable to intervene as the threats were not specific. This would be the last time his family heard from him.
The day after Daniel's last contact with his family, a man found his wallet on a road leading into the Four Peaks Wilderness area, about an hour north of Phoenix, and left a message on his answering machine. It wasn't until eleven days after he was last heard from that authorities searched his apartment, finding a Bible and an open notebook on a table, but no sign of Daniel. Following the discovery of his wallet, a search of the Four Peaks area was initiated. On June 9th, his vehicle was found abandoned at the Cline Trailhead. Despite the discovery of his car and wallet, extensive searches of the rugged terrain by the Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies yielded no further clues as to his whereabouts. The reason for Daniel traveling to the Four Peaks area remains a mystery to his family, as he was more accustomed to hiking in areas closer to Phoenix, such as Camelback Mountain and Squaw Peak, and had not been to the Four Peaks since he was a child.
