In the winter of 1999, a journey intended to reunite family members took an unforeseen and distressing turn, leaving a void that has persisted for over two decades. Steven Daniel Paul, a 23-year-old man, began what should have been a straightforward trip from his home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to visit his brother in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On December 2, 1999, he boarded a Greyhound bus, a common mode of long-distance travel. However, Steven never reached his destination. The last known contact with him came on December 4, 1999, from Nashville, Tennessee. In a series of phone calls to his grandfather from various payphones, Steven explained that he had been forced to leave the bus. He said he needed money, adding a layer of urgency and concern to his already troubling situation. The details surrounding Steven's removal from the bus painted a picture of a young man left stranded and vulnerable. He informed his grandfather that he was kicked off the bus because he had beer on his breath, an act that violated the carrier's policy. Following these calls, an unsettling silence fell. While Steven himself had vanished, his luggage continued on the bus route and arrived in Chattanooga as planned. This strange separation of a traveler from his belongings immediately alarmed his family and law enforcement. At the time of his disappearance, Steven was described as a Black male, standing 5'10" and weighing around 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He may have had a mustache, beard, or goatee. He was possibly wearing a dark-colored jacket with a corduroy collar and light brown corduroy pants. The investigation into Steven's disappearance was hampered from the start by a lack of substantial leads or physical evidence that could illuminate his last known movements after his phone calls. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department opened a case, but without witnesses to his activities after leaving the bus station, the trail quickly grew cold. Compounding the difficulty of the search was Steven's health; he suffered from occasional seizures and memory loss, for which he required medication. This medical condition raised additional concerns for his well-being and safety, as his family worried he could be disoriented and in need of medical attention. Over the years, his case has remained open, a persistent and painful mystery for his loved ones who continue to hope for answers and closure.
