In the winter of 2000, Matthew Pendergrast, a 23-year-old male, was a promising student at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, with his life stretching out before him. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, where his family resided, he was just two weeks away from his college graduation. On the morning of December 1, 2000, between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., Matthew was seen leaving his residence in Memphis. He was driving his navy 1998 Toyota 4Runner, heading to a Spanish class that was only four blocks away from his home. He never made it to his class. That morning, he made a phone call to a friend in Atlanta, which would be the last time anyone is known to have heard from him. Concern grew as the day progressed with no sign of Matthew. Later that same day, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Matthew's Toyota 4Runner was discovered abandoned in a different state. The vehicle was found on a private dirt road in Lonoke County, Arkansas, about two hours from Memphis, near the Bayou Meta, a swampy area frequented by local hunters. The discovery of the SUV was unsettling; the vehicle was unlocked with the keys still in the ignition and his backpack left inside. This finding prompted an immediate search of the surrounding area. Investigators from the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police were involved in the search, utilizing tracking dogs, helicopters, and boats with sonar equipment to scour the swampy terrain. The Memphis Police Department also opened a missing person investigation, searching his apartment for any clues that might point to his whereabouts. His family was baffled as to why he would have been in that part of Arkansas, stating he had no known connections to the area. The search of the area around his vehicle yielded more perplexing discoveries. About 100 yards from the 4Runner, investigators found a pile of Matthew's clothing, including his jeans, t-shirt, shoes, and socks. His wallet was found in the pocket of his jeans, containing his driver's license, credit cards, and $46 in cash. Despite the extensive search efforts, there was no sign of Matthew Pendergrast himself. Inside his abandoned vehicle, a journal was found which contained troubling and cryptic entries about "Silver Elves," the desire for immortality, and "walking into water and becoming one with nature again." The meaning of these writings remains unclear, and it is unknown if they are connected to his disappearance. His family does not believe he would have taken his own life, and there was no evidence to suggest he was involved in any illicit activities. The official classification of his disappearance is that of an endangered missing person, with investigators considering the circumstances to be suspicious; some have even suggested that the scene where his clothing was found may have been staged. The case of what happened to Matthew Pendergrast after he left for his Spanish class that December morning remains a painful and unanswered question for his family and investigators.
