In the late winter of 2002, a sense of unease settled over the family of Michael Allen Jarvi, a 28-year-old man from Naselle, Washington. On March 22, Michael, who was also known as Mickel, left his family's home with a plan to meet his cousin in Astoria, Oregon. He was last seen wearing a blue and black Columbian Sportswear jacket, a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and white athletic shoes. Michael is described as a white male, 6'1" tall and weighing around 170 pounds, with sandy or dark blonde hair and hazel eyes. He has distinctive physical features, including a cleft chin, also described as a dimple, and a right ear lobe that is smaller than his left. He was also wearing a wristwatch at the time of his disappearance. The hours turned into a day, and Michael never arrived for the planned meeting in Astoria. The timeline of his movements and subsequent sightings became increasingly fragmented and concerning. After leaving his home, Michael reportedly drove to the Long Beach area to meet with a counselor before meeting relatives in Ilwaco, Washington, and Warrenton, Oregon. That same day, a suspicious person complaint was made in Lincoln County, Oregon, involving a man and a red Ford Escort matching Michael's vehicle who had attempted to enter a residence. By the time law enforcement arrived, the individual and the car were gone. The following day, March 23, Michael visited another relative's home in St. Johns, Oregon, where he ate and showered before leaving for an unknown destination. He was officially reported missing by a family member later that afternoon. The last confirmed sighting of him was in the 9000 block of North Sycamore Street in Portland, Oregon. The day after he was reported missing, Michael's red Ford Escort was discovered abandoned in Sutherlin, Oregon, at an old RV trailer park adjacent to a county park. Some of his personal items were found near the vehicle. This discovery only deepened the mystery, as all of his other personal belongings had been left at his residence in Naselle, suggesting he had not planned to be gone for long. In the days and weeks that followed, a number of potential sightings were reported. A witness claimed to have given a ride to a man matching Michael's description to Roseburg, Oregon, who said his car had broken down. Other possible sightings occurred in the Mount Hood and Government Camp areas of Oregon, and later in the spring of 2002, in the Hermiston and Borden areas. However, investigators were never able to confirm if the man in these sightings was indeed Michael. His family noted that while he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, it was uncharacteristic of him to leave without any warning. The case of Michael Jarvi remains an open and troubling puzzle, a story of a young man who set out for a short trip and vanished, leaving behind a trail of confusing clues and a family still searching for answers.
