Brookley Louks, a 19-year-old woman from Greenwood, Indiana, disappeared on June 24, 2002. That day, she returned to her father's apartment to collect some clothing and noticed that his computer had been stolen. She contacted the police to report the burglary. Shortly after the police left, a witness reportedly saw her get into the passenger side of her blue Chevy Corsica, which was being driven by an unidentified man.
Brookley had told her mother she was planning to stay at a friend's house that evening, but she never arrived and was never heard from again.
On July 1, 2002, Brookley's car was found abandoned about 10 miles away in Waverly, Indiana, near State Road 37 and Highway 144, but there was no sign of her. Suspicion soon turned to Joseph Nowicki, a family acquaintance with a long criminal history, including convictions for murder and sexual assault. Investigators found blood matching Brookley’s DNA in Nowicki's workshop, and evidence suggested someone had attempted to clean the area. However, the amount of blood was insufficient to indicate she had been killed at the location.
Nowicki became the prime suspect in her disappearance, but despite extensive investigations, no charges were ever brought against him. He died in 2003 of cancer, taking any secrets he might have had with him. Brookley's father, Scott Louks, was also questioned, as some believed he might have been withholding information, but he died later that year as well, further complicating the case.
Brookley’s family continues to seek answers. Her case remains unsolved, though many believe Nowicki may have been involved in her disappearance.
