Carl Steven Sanders, age 48, went missing on July 7, 2002, while sightseeing with his wife, Debra, in the Big Smoky Valley, Nevada. The couple ran out of gas on a Forest Service road east of Highway 376 in extreme heat, where temperatures reached up to 125 degrees. Without water or provisions, they attempted to hike to the main road for help. Two days later, Debra was found delirious and severely dehydrated by a motorist, who airlifted her to a hospital.
