On a rainy Thursday night, August 29, 2002, a 31-year-old nurse named Audrey May Herron finished her 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. shift at the former Greene County Long Term Care facility in Jefferson Heights, New York. Coworkers saw her leave in her black 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, beginning the 12-mile drive home to Freehold, New York. She was last seen driving west on State Route 23 in Catskill around 11:00 p.m. Dressed in dark green medical scrubs and a blue turtleneck, Audrey never arrived home that night. The following morning, her husband, Jeff Herron, reported her missing after she failed to return home. This began one of the most extensive missing persons investigations in the county's history. The investigation into Audrey's disappearance was launched immediately, but from the outset, clues were scarce. The only potential piece of visual evidence is a grainy video from a Cumberland Farms that seems to show her Jeep leaving the area of her workplace and turning west onto Route 23-B. Despite exhaustive efforts, neither Audrey nor her Jeep Grand Cherokee with New York license plate X233UV have ever been located. Law enforcement has consistently stated that she is missing under "suspicious circumstances." Over the years, the investigation has involved numerous state and federal agencies, including the FBI. Thousands of leads have been followed across the United States and Canada, and hundreds of individuals have been interviewed to no avail. The search for Audrey has been relentless, encompassing vast areas of land and water. Authorities have utilized helicopters to scan the region from above, while ground searches have covered more than 120 miles of roads and trails. Numerous bodies of water, including ponds, creeks, the Hudson River, Maurer's Lake, and the Potuck Reservoir, have been meticulously searched, sometimes multiple times with advanced sonar equipment by both law enforcement and volunteer groups like Adventures with Purpose. Despite these intensive and ongoing efforts, no trace of Audrey or her vehicle has been discovered. The case remains an active investigation, a painful mystery for her three children and a community still hoping for answers after more than two decades.
