In the summer of 2004, a 27-year-old man named Delwin Locklear, known to his loved ones as 'Little Dee,' disappeared from his home in Maxton, North Carolina. On or around July 6th or 7th, the Native American man was last seen in a wooded area behind his residence in the vicinity of the 200 block of Nina Road in Robeson County. At the time he went missing, Delwin was a father and a member of the Lumbee tribe, a fact he proudly displayed with a tattoo of the word 'Lumbee' on his upper right arm. His sudden vanishing left his family and community with questions that have painfully lingered for years.
Delwin was a distinctive-looking man with blue eyes and dark brown hair that was beginning to gray. He stood around 5'7' tall and weighed approximately 185 to 190 pounds. He had several tattoos, including praying hands about three inches tall on the inside of his left wrist. Other identifying marks included a small strawberry birthmark on the back of his neck below the hairline, scars across the inside of both wrists, and a pierced left ear where he wore a diamond stud. When he disappeared, it's believed he was wearing two gold rope necklaces, one of which held a woman's ring, and a silver wristband bracelet with a gold ball on each end. He may have also been carrying two wallets, one black and the other brown. He typically wore size XL t-shirts or button-up shirts and size 38 baggy shorts or jeans.
In the days following Delwin's disappearance, extensive searches were conducted in the area surrounding his home. Search and rescue teams, using K-9 units and ATVs, scoured the woods and nearby terrain but found no trace of him and no evidence to suggest what might have happened. Over the years, his family has held vigils, and his case has been included in tours to remember the missing, keeping his story alive in the public consciousness. In 2019, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office made a renewed appeal to the public for any information that might help solve the case. Despite these efforts, Delwin's disappearance remains a cold case, a profound and enduring mystery for his family and the community. The lack of clues or any sign of his whereabouts has left his loved ones without closure, caught in an unending search for answers about the fate of 'Little Dee.'
