On a summer evening in August 2004, a 21-year-old man named John Matthew Thrasher vanished, leaving his family with decades of unanswered questions. He was last seen on August 14, 2004, in Cookeville, Tennessee. Accounts of his final known movements vary slightly, with some stating he was last seen by his parents on August 15 when an unidentified person picked him up from their residence in Livingston. Other reports place his last known location at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in Cookeville on August 14th. At the time of his disappearance, John was described as a white male, standing at 6'1" and weighing approximately 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans. His family reported him missing on August 16, 2004, after he failed to return home or make contact, which was out of character for him. John was known to have several distinct tattoos. These included the name "Thrasher" in an Old English script on the inside of his right forearm, a one-inch-wide rope with a knot tattooed around his left bicep, another tattoo across the back of his neck, and an unusual design with his initials "JT" in the center of his lower back. In the initial stages of the investigation, some authorities suggested that John, being an adult, might have left on his own accord. However, his family has always maintained their belief that he met with foul play, a fear that has grown with the passage of time. They have expressed doubts about the accounts given by the friends he was reportedly with, and question whether he ever actually made it to the fair that night. During this search, a devastating accident occurred when Overton County Deputy Chad Pritchard lost his footing and fell to his death in one of the sinkholes.
