In the summer of 2005, a cloud of uncertainty descended upon the community of Mayfield, Kentucky, with the disappearance of 58-year-old Sandra Kay Travis. She was last seen at her home, situated in the area of Old Dukedom Road and Slaughter Road, on July 31, 2005. However, the official report of her disappearance was not filed until August 21, more than three weeks after she was last seen.
The report was made by her husband of 25 years, Bobby Travis, after his relatives contacted Sandra's children and discovered that his initial explanation for her absence was untrue. Initially, Bobby had informed his family that Sandra had passed away while visiting her children in Mount Vernon, Illinois. This false claim raised immediate concern among family members, prompting them to press Bobby to notify the authorities.
When questioned by investigators, Bobby Travis altered his story, claiming that Sandra had voluntarily left with a semi-truck driver from southern Illinois. He described the truck as white with small red lettering, explaining that he had previously lied due to embarrassment. However, this account could not be confirmed, and Bobby declined to take a polygraph examination. Shortly after reporting his wife missing, Bobby vacated the home they shared, leaving most of their belongings behind. The residence was soon abandoned and became overgrown over the years. Reports from those who knew the couple suggested a troubled marriage, with allegations that Bobby was physically and emotionally abusive toward Sandra. He was named a person of interest in her disappearance, though he was never officially named a suspect before his death in 2014.
Years of investigation have yielded few answers in Sandra's case. In 2007, a tip led investigators to search a pond near the Travis home, but the search proved fruitless. Later, in 2019, authorities received information about a large concrete pad that had been poured in front of the residence shortly after Sandra vanished. With renewed hope for a breakthrough, investigators gained legal access to the now-overgrown property and used a backhoe to remove the approximately 12 by 20-foot concrete slab. A thorough search of the area underneath was conducted, but sadly, no evidence related to Sandra's disappearance was found. The case remains an unsolved and painful mystery for Sandra's loved ones, who continue to hope for answers. Described as a woman with red hair and blue eyes, Sandra had several distinguishing features, including freckles on her face, chest, arms, and legs, a dimple on her chin, and various scars and a birthmark. She also wore wire-framed eyeglasses and was believed to be wearing a thin gold band on her left pinky finger and possibly a watch with a gold band at the time of her disappearance.
