Raymond Dean Shurtz, a 74-year-old man from Cedar City, Utah, went missing on November 26, 2005. Shurtz, who also went by his middle name Dean, suffered from Alzheimer's disease and internal bleeding, which made his disappearance particularly concerning. On the day of his disappearance, he was seen in Fillmore, Utah, where he was issued a citation for driving the wrong way on the freeway. He was driving a green 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck with Utah plates at the time.
This was the last confirmed sighting of him.
A few days later, on December 1, 2005, Shurtz's truck was discovered abandoned near the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, just off Interstate 15. Witnesses reported seeing the truck as early as November 28, but there was no sign of Shurtz himself. The vehicle was stuck on a frontage road, and authorities speculated that Shurtz may have accepted a ride from someone after abandoning the truck. Despite multiple searches, including aerial surveillance, no trace of Shurtz was found.
Given Shurtz's medical condition, authorities feared for his safety, but no concrete leads have emerged. Some believe he might have wandered off into remote areas such as Escalante or Boulder, Utah, or even crossed into Arizona.
