In the autumn of 1966, the Rafala family was building a new life in Middletown, Connecticut, having arrived from Sicily only a few months prior. Their 24-year-old son, Salvatore, was adjusting to his new surroundings, finding work at a local fashion shop despite his limited English. He lived with his parents, Carmelo and Lucia Rafala, on Spring Street.
