The day after Christmas in 1968, a nine-year-old boy named Bob Louis Richard Boyes vanished from his hometown of Port Republic, Maryland. That afternoon, December 26th, Bob, also known as Bobby, had been at a neighbor's house with his brothers, showing off their new Christmas toys. His brothers left earlier, but Bob chose to stay and play longer. When he eventually left the friend's home to walk back to his own, he was accompanied by his pet deer, Pete.
The neighbor's mother watched through her kitchen window as Bob and his deer walked down Wash Hance Road until they were out of her sight. Tragically, while his pet deer found its way home, Bob did not. He was never seen or heard from again.
Bob was last seen wearing a dark blue coat with a hood, a plaid shirt, dark pants, and brown leather boots. He was a white male with brown hair and brown eyes, stood at four feet tall, and weighed around 80 pounds. A noticeable characteristic was a scar on his upper lip. When Bob didn't return home, his family grew worried and contacted the police at approximately 7:30 p.m. An extensive search was launched immediately, with hundreds of volunteers joining law enforcement to scour the wooded area where he was last seen, searching by both ground and air. Despite these exhaustive efforts, not a single trace of the young boy was found. His younger sister, Joy Lee, who was only three at the time of his disappearance, later recalled the sentiment from the search teams that it was as if Bobby had "disappeared in thin air, without a trace."
The investigation into Bob's disappearance was led by the Maryland State Police, but as time went on, all leads were exhausted, and the case eventually went cold. The Boyes family was relatively new to the tight-knit community, which may have presented challenges for investigators trying to gather information. Over the decades, the case has remained a painful puzzle for both his family and law enforcement. In 2021, a new detective sergeant was assigned to the Prince Frederick Barrack and took over the investigation, hoping to bring a fresh perspective and generate new leads by revisiting the case and re-engaging the public.
