Mary Katherine Miller, 46, was last seen on June 20, 1979, in Provo, Utah. On that day, she had dinner with her daughter and expressed her intent to visit her ex-husband's grave in American Fork, Utah, after discovering that he had passed away the year before, a fact that greatly upset her. Mary was never heard from again after that evening.
Her disappearance was reported weeks later, and on July 16, 1979, her brown Honda Civic was found abandoned on a remote dirt road near the
Timpooneke Trailhead on Mount Timpanogos. Inside the vehicle were her personal belongings, including her purse, keys, and wallet. Investigators spoke to sheep herders in the area, one of whom claimed to have seen a woman resembling Mary walking away from the vehicle. Another herder admitted plans to steal the car, which raised suspicion, but no concrete evidence was found to charge anyone in connection with her disappearance.
