More than a month later, on September 14, 1986, Carlstrom's maroon and white 1978 Ford F-150 pickup truck was found abandoned in a remote desert area about 20 miles north of Pahrump, Nevada. The vehicle appeared to have been left recently, with Carlstrom's personal belongings still inside, but there was no sign of him. At the time of his disappearance, Carlstrom was involved in a multi-million-dollar personal injury lawsuit, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
