Rebecca Pauline Gary, known to her loved ones as Becky, was a 32-year-old single mother living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1988. She worked as a waitress and was described as beautiful and outgoing, enjoying the social scene and mingling with the city's elite. In the year leading up to her disappearance, she began carrying a large manila envelope, telling her mother that if anything were to happen to her, the answers would be inside it, hidden under her bed. Around the same time, she confided in some friends and family that she was involved in an affair with the then-governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards, a man known for being a womanizer. In mid-December of 1988, Becky sent her 12-year-old daughter, Jamie, to spend the holidays with family in Shreveport, a decision that led to an argument between them. This would be the last time Jamie saw her mother. On December 27, 1988, Becky called her sister, Joyce, expressing that things in Baton Rouge were not working out and that she wanted to move back to Shreveport. This was the last time anyone in her family heard from her. In early January, the manager of Becky's apartment building contacted her sister, concerned that the rent was overdue and she hadn't been able to reach Becky. Given permission to enter the apartment, the manager discovered a scene that suggested a hasty and interrupted departure. The lights and coffee maker were still on, the bathtub was filled with water, and two cups sat on the bar. In the bedroom, a suitcase was packed on the bed, surrounded by family photos. A torn-up autographed photograph of Governor Edwin Edwards was found on the counter. Crucially, the mysterious manila envelope that Becky had spoken of was nowhere to be found. Her purse, keys, and car were all left behind. Despite the unsettling scene at her apartment, the official investigation into Rebecca Gary's disappearance was slow to start. Her family's pleas for the police to process the apartment for evidence went unanswered, and eventually, her brother had to clear out her belongings. She was officially reported missing on January 20, 1989, more than three weeks after she was last heard from. Her daughter, Jamie Williams, has long maintained that Governor Edwin Edwards was involved in her mother's disappearance, believing that her mother was planning to end their alleged affair. Edwards, who later served prison time for corruption and passed away in 2021, denied both the affair and any knowledge of what happened to Rebecca. The case is considered a suspicious disappearance and remains unsolved, leaving her family with unanswered questions. The lack of a thorough initial investigation and the missing envelope have left a void of information, making it difficult to piece together the final moments of Rebecca Gary's life.
