Karen Ann Spencer, a 17-year-old high school senior from Reading, Ohio, disappeared on a cold December night in 1989. She was last seen in the early morning hours on Interstate 275 in Miami Township, Ohio. The specific details surrounding the exact date are vague, though it is reported to have occurred on December 29th. At the time, Karen was living with her brother and sister-in-law, Christy Spencer, and had plans to move to Florida with them after her graduation. On the night she went missing, Karen and Christy were driving in Christy's black Buick Regal when an argument ensued about the upcoming move to Florida. Karen, who was driving, pulled the car over between the Montgomery Road and Route 28 exits and got out of the vehicle. Christy reported that Karen began walking north along the interstate. According to Christy's account, after Karen exited the car, a man in his early twenties driving a red 1982 Datsun B-310 stopped and asked if they needed help. Christy stated she told him to leave, which he did. She then drove about three miles to the next interchange, turned around to go back for Karen, but she was gone. This was the last time Karen was reportedly seen by her sister-in-law. The man in the Datsun later gave inconsistent statements to police and strangely knew what Karen and Christy had been arguing about. He had his car cleaned twice the day Karen disappeared, and the vehicle vanished shortly after, with no record of it being sold. Though he passed a polygraph test, FBI behavioral scientists later suggested he may have manipulated the results. A friend of this man also claimed he talked about Karen's disappearance before she was even reported missing. The investigation into Karen's disappearance has been long and fraught with frustrating leads and false hopes. A witness came forward in 1990, stating she had offered a ride to a young woman matching Karen's description walking southbound on I-275 on the same night, which contradicted Christy's statement. The young woman seemed to recognize the driver of a red truck with Kentucky license plates that pulled up, so the witness drove on, assuming she had found a ride. In 1993, a truck driver claimed he saw a man burying a woman's body near Lake Isabella around the time Karen went missing and recognized Karen from a missing person poster. However, searches of the area yielded no evidence. The Spencer family also endured a cruel hoax in 2000 when a man falsely claimed to know the location of Karen's remains, leading to his arrest. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance. Karen left behind two uncashed paychecks from her job and had only seven dollars with her when she vanished. While Christy passed a polygraph and is not considered a suspect, authorities have had a person of interest in the case for many years, though they have not been publicly identified. The case remains an unsolved and painful mystery for her family, who remember her as a spunky and lively young woman who disappeared just two weeks shy of her eighteenth birthday.
