On the night of April 4, 1991, 20-year-old Angela 'Angie' Hammond, who was four months pregnant, vanished from a payphone in Clinton, Missouri. She was on the phone with her fiancé, Rob Shafer, around 11:15 p.m. from a parking lot at the Food Barn Store. During their conversation, she described a suspicious man in an older model two-tone green Ford pickup truck that was circling the block. The truck had a distinctive mural of a fish jumping out of water on the back window.
Angie told Rob the man, whom she described as a 'filthy, bearded man' wearing overalls, got out of his truck and approached the phone booth. Moments later, Rob heard Angie scream, and then the line went dead.
Rob immediately drove the seven blocks to the payphone. On his way, he passed a truck matching the description Angie had given him and heard her scream his name. He attempted to pursue the vehicle, but his car's transmission failed, and he was forced to stop as the truck disappeared. When police arrived at the scene, they found Angie's car in the parking lot, but she was gone. Rob was initially considered a suspect, as is common in such cases, but he was cleared after passing a polygraph test and has always been considered a witness by law enforcement.
Over the years, numerous theories have been explored in Angela Hammond's disappearance. One theory suggests her abduction may be linked to the cases of two other Missouri women who also went missing under suspicious circumstances around the same time: Trudy Darby and Cheryl Ann Kenney. Another theory that emerged decades later, on the 30th anniversary of her disappearance, is that Angie may have been a victim of mistaken identity. Investigators revealed they were looking into the possibility that the intended target was another woman, also named Angela, whose father was a police informant in a narcotics case. A threatening note targeting this other Angela was sent on the same day Angie Hammond was abducted. Despite the various theories and extensive searches, no definitive evidence has surfaced to resolve the case.
