In the late summer of 1992, a young man named Greg Stephan Tilley, a 22-year-old from Kirkwood, Missouri, embarked on a journey from which he would not return. On September 18, 1992, he was last seen in the St. Louis area, believed to be heading towards the West Coast. Tilley, a Caucasian male with light brown hair and blue eyes, stood at an imposing six feet four inches and was of a slender build. He wore either glasses or contact lenses.
His family and friends held onto hope for his safe return, but as days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, the silence from his end of the country was deafening. He has not been seen or heard from since he left Missouri.
The first significant break in the case came nearly a year later, in the arid expanse of the Nevada desert. In July 1993, cowboys in a remote area of Eureka County stumbled upon an abandoned vehicle. The car, a gray 1986 four-door Chevrolet Nova, was identified as belonging to Greg Tilley. The discovery, however, brought more questions than answers. The car was not only abandoned but had also been burned. Adding to the mystery, the windshield on the driver's side had a large hole smashed through it, and the vehicle identification number from the dashboard had been removed. The location of the car was desolate, on an unnamed road miles from any town, suggesting that wherever Tilley had gone, it was not a place easily reached or left.
Despite the discovery of his car, Greg Tilley's whereabouts remain unknown. The Kirkwood Police Department in Missouri continues to investigate his disappearance. Several days after he was last seen, a car matching his was reportedly spotted parked along Tonkin Springs Road in Eureka County, Nevada, over 1,500 miles from his home. A deputy was dispatched to investigate the report but was unable to locate the vehicle at that time. Ten months later, his burned and damaged car was found northwest of that initial reported location.
